Bronx Community College: The Bronx Community College of the City University of New York (BCC) is a community college located on a landmarked campus in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. Chairperson/Professor
Dr. Neal Phillip is the Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences at Bronx Community College/CUNY. He has published journal articles on atmospheric pollution, water pollution/treatment and on STEM pedagogical research and has developed curricula and degree programs in Earth and Environmental Science in CUNY. Dr. Phillip was selected as a member of the CUNY Pathways Steering Committee to develop CUNY’s 30 credit Common Core. He established the Bronx/CUNY Weather Station and the Greenhouse Gas monitoring program. Dr. Phillip has involved Bronx/CUNY students in cloud chemistry/physics research literally living in clouds at Storm Peak Lab (10,525ft) in Steamboat Springs, CO. He was formerly Senior Project Engineer and Engineering Advisor at Savin Engineers in New York and developed design specifications for the retrofit of four Westchester County water pollution control plants for nutrient removal/UV disinfection. Dr. Phillip holds a Ph.D. and a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering, and dual Bachelors in Chemistry/Meteorology.
Lecturer
Paramita Sen is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. Sen is highly knowledgeable in sustainability and teaches courses ranging from Geography, Geology, Meteorology and Environmental Science. She has been instrumental in increasing the profile and enrollment in the Earth Science and Environmental Science Honors courses at Bronx/CUNY by involving students in research and study abroad programs. Prof. Sen plans and implements international workshops on the topic of sustainability. She is also currently working on the stratification of phosphorous in Prospect Park and lake in New York City and spent several years assisting on the “Climatic Report Cards of New Jersey” project to collect hand written climate data for various stations and making it available in usable electronic format for weather station data end users. Sen holds a Master’s degree in Geography, Bachelor’s degree in Education, and Bachelor’s degree in Geography all from Calcutta University in India.
